Feedback
During our
focus group where we pitched our film in progress, ‘Jasper: The Bully Who
Didn’t Stop’ we got great feedback that we will use to enhance our film
treatment and make it more suitable to the target audience.
In the
original treatment, the protagonist was an unfortunate nerd whose life is being
made worse by a mischievous ghost! The group (17-18 year olds) found this
concept to ‘sick’. From this we’ve learned that audiences don’t like to see
good people get bullied and haunted for fun. They failed to see the comedy.
Instead, they suggested that the protagonist be a bully who is then haunted as
a result of Karma.
The audience
also brought forward an ethical issue regarding Christianity. In the original
film treatment, Nigel’s life improves when he finds God which annoys the ghost
making him more determined to ruin Nigel’s life. Even though comedy isn’t funny
unless it offends, the focus group felt it was best to leave out religion thus
removing the turning point in Nigel’s life. The group felt that Nigel didn’t
need a turning point in his tragic life for the ghost to possess him. Also they
didn’t like the fact that his life doesn’t get better seeing as he’s innocent.
The group
suggested that Nigel be an arrogant, mean, popular, bully who would make the
mischievous ghost ‘Karma’ give Nigel a taste of his own medicine and ruin his
life!
Nigel is now
Brad!
